Stair-step cracks in brick or block
Note which wall has the crack and whether it follows the joints between blocks or bricks.

Cracks across tile or slab floors
Photograph the full route of the crack, including where it crosses into another room.
Ask FAS: Is the visible crack in the floor finish, the slab beneath it, or both?
A visibly wide or open crack
Include a ruler in a clear photo and record the location. The drawing exaggerates width to make it visible.

A crack that has changed over time
Compare dated photos of the same spot. Note when you first noticed a change.

Doors or windows that stick
Record which openings stick, whether they latch, and when you first noticed it.

Sloping or bouncy floors
Note where the floor feels uneven or moves underfoot, and whether the home has raised floors.

Cracks at door or window corners
Capture the whole opening and a close-up of the crack. Note any similar cracks nearby.
